SACRAMENT OF SERVICE

Holy Matrimony

In the Sacrament of Matrimony, a man and a woman enter into a lifelong covenant of love before God and His Church.

THE SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE

A Covenant Before God

Holy Matrimony is a sacred covenant in which a man and a woman freely give themselves to one another for life before God and His Church.

Through this sacrament, husband and wife are strengthened by God’s grace and called to become a living sign of the faithful and sacrificial love between Christ and His Church.

PREPARING FOR MARRIAGE

Begin Your Preparation Early

Marriage preparation is a time for prayer, discernment, and thoughtful preparation for a lifelong sacramental vocation. Couples should begin the process well before making final wedding arrangements.

Be Active Parishioners

Couples seeking marriage in the Diocese of Charlotte are expected to be registered and active in their parish for at least six months before requesting the sacrament.

Meet with a Priest or Deacon

Begin working with a priest or deacon at least six months before the anticipated wedding date. This allows time for spiritual preparation, documentation, and planning the liturgy.

Complete Marriage Preparation Couples participate in a marriage preparation program and complete the required premarital preparation process with the priest or deacon.

Natural Family Planning

An introductory Natural Family Planning class is required for couples preparing for marriage in the Diocese of Charlotte.

BEFORE THE WEDDING

Documents & Special Circumstances

The documents required for marriage may vary depending on each couple’s circumstances. Your priest or deacon will guide you through the process and help determine exactly what is needed.

Sacramental Records

Catholic parties will need current sacramental documentation, including a recently issued baptismal certificate and records of Confirmation and First Communion.

Freedom to Marry

The marriage preparation process includes documentation establishing each person’s freedom to marry and confirming that there is no impediment to the marriage.

Civil Marriage License

A civil marriage license issued by the appropriate county Register of Deeds is required before the wedding.

Mixed Marriages

When a Catholic marries a non-Catholic Christian or a non-baptized person, additional permission or dispensation may be required. The priest or deacon will assist with this process.
