UNDERSTANDING THE MASS
Questions About the Mass?
Whether you are visiting a Catholic church for the first time or have attended Mass for many years, questions about our worship are always welcome.
Below you will find answers to some of the most common questions about the celebration of the Mass at Our Lady of the Rosary.
COMMON QUESTIONS
What to Know Before You Come
A few simple answers can help you feel more comfortable and better understand what takes place during the celebration of the Mass.
Can anyone attend Catholic Mass?
Yes. Everyone is welcome to attend Mass at Our Lady of the Rosary, whether you are Catholic, belong to another Christian tradition, practice another faith, or are simply visiting and curious about Catholic worship.
What should I wear to Mass?
There is no special dress code for attending Mass. We simply encourage clothing that is modest and respectful of the sacred nature of the church and the celebration of the Eucharist.
How early should I arrive?
Arriving about 10–15 minutes before Mass begins gives you time to find a seat, become familiar with the church, and prepare quietly for worship.
What if I do not know when to sit, stand, or kneel?
Do not worry. You are welcome to follow the congregation as you feel comfortable. Sitting, standing, and kneeling are part of Catholic worship, but visitors should never feel embarrassed if they are unfamiliar with these customs.
Do I need to know all of the prayers and responses?
No. You are welcome to listen and participate as much as you are comfortable. With time, the prayers and responses of the Mass become familiar.
Can a non-Catholic receive Holy Communion?
Those who are not Catholic are warmly invited to attend Mass and pray with us. However, reception of Holy Communion is ordinarily reserved for Catholics who are properly prepared to receive the Eucharist. Those who are not receiving Communion may remain in the pew and continue in prayer.
Are children welcome at Mass?
Absolutely. Children are an important part of our parish family and are always welcome at Mass. Parents should feel comfortable bringing their children and helping them gradually learn how to participate in the liturgy.
How long does Mass usually last?
A typical weekday Mass is shorter, while Sunday Mass generally lasts about one hour. The length may vary on feast days and during special liturgical celebrations.
THE HOLY EUCHARIST
Receiving Holy Communion
The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Catholic faith. Because receiving Holy Communion expresses full communion with the Catholic Church, the Church asks Catholics to receive the Eucharist with proper preparation and reverence.
Who May Receive?
Catholics who are properly disposed may receive Holy Communion. This ordinarily means being in full communion with the Catholic Church, observing the Eucharistic fast, and not being conscious of grave sin without first receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
If You Are Not Receiving
Guests who are not Catholic, Catholics who are not prepared to receive, and anyone who chooses not to receive Communion are warmly welcome to remain in the pew and pray during Communion. Your presence at Mass is sincerely welcomed.
